Dental Care Albuquerque, NM

Dental Care

It is a shocking statistic: the vast majority of pets (nearly 80 percent) over the age of three have some degree of periodontal disease. Unfortunately, the majority of pet owners are usually unaware of their pets’ suffering. Our South Valley veterinarian wants to raise awareness about how pet dental health is critical to a pet’s overall good health. The fact is, periodontal disease is very painful for pets, and the bacteria that lead to their pain can go on to infect a pet’s vital organs (heart, liver kidneys) if left unchecked. We urge pet owners to take a two-pronged approach to keeping their pets’ teeth healthy: come in for an annual pet dental checkup and learn how to brush your pet’s teeth at home every day, and routine dental cleanings. Our facility does offer dental prophylaxis cleanings with extractions. Call to inquire about our pricing. Examinations are required before we can schedule your pet for a dental prophylaxis.

Surgery Albuquerque, NM

Here at South Valley Animal Clinic, our veterinarians have decades of experience performing pet surgery on dog and cat patients. Many of the surgeries we perform are routine surgeries such as spay and neuter procedures, but we also handle a variety of procedures from lumpectomies to dentals. While pet surgery can be a stressful time for pet owners and pets alike, we do everything we can to make the process smooth, safe and successful.

Pet Surgery: From Routine to Emergency Vet Care

Whether your pet needs a routine spay or neuter surgery, our pet surgery protocols are just as stringent as those in human hospitals. All equipment is carefully sanitized and all care is made to ensure your pet is safe and comfortable from pre-op to post surgery.  Before we begin, we will discuss what we intend to do to help your pet so that you will understand what is going on.

While our veterinarian prepares for the surgery, one of our veterinary technicians assists throughout the procedure, constantly checking your pet’s vital signs, administering IV fluids if necessary, as well as any pain management medications needed to help your pet stay comfortable. Our veterinarians have years of on-going training and experience in many surgical techniques and are able to  remove tumors, or to remove reproductive organs. We always try to be as minimally invasive as possible and are constantly studying the latest pet surgery techniques.
Once your pet comes out of surgery, our vet tech will remain with and continue checking in on your pet as he or she comes out of the anesthesia. We make sure your pet has pain medications so that he or she remains as comfortable and calm as possible. When you come to pick up your pet, our surgery vet tech will explain how the operation went and discuss with you what you need to do to help your pet recover at home. We will explain any medications or wound-care procedures you need to know about and answer all of your questions so that you will feel confident in helping your pet’s recuperation process. We often issue pets a cone or Elizabethan collar to wear so they do not bite or lick their incision site.

Vaccinations Albuquerque, NM

Vaccinations play a critical role in protecting your pet’s health. Core dog and cat vaccines are generally begun at the age of six to eight weeks. Core kitten vaccines include those for panleukopenia, feline calicivirus and rabies. Core puppy vaccinations include rabies, parvovirus, canine distemper and infectious hepatitis. Your dog or cat may also need vaccinations against Feline Leukemia, kennel cough or other ailments, depending on the risk of exposure. Booster shots are needed for these core vaccinations at regular intervals. We can administer the appropriate dog or cat vaccines for a lifetime of good health.

Keep Pet Care Affordable with Albuquerque Vaccinations at a Reduced Cost
Our Albuquerque veterinarian offers core vaccinations. The core vaccination series are vaccines that every dog or cat should receive. These vaccinations are typically administered as a combined shot. For dogs, the core canine vaccinations are distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvovirus, collectively known as DAPP. For cats, the core feline vaccinations protect against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia (feline distemper); this vaccine series is known as FVRCP. We provide these vaccinations for adult dogs and cats, as well as for puppies and kittens.

As part of our commitment to offering a wide range of vaccinations, our Albuquerque animal clinic also provides rabies vaccination, along with bordetella (kennel cough). When deciding which vaccines are appropriate for your pet, our Albuquerque veterinarian will first evaluate your pet’s overall health and lifestyle, and then make recommendations. We work closely with each pet owner to ensure pets receive the right vaccinations for their wellness needs.

Keeping your pet up to date on vaccinations is one of the most important steps you can take as a pet owner to reduce the risk for illness. Vaccinations are a smart investment in your pet’s health. Should your pet become ill from parvo, distemper or another preventable disease, emergency veterinary care can be very expensive. Worse, many older pets have weaker immune systems and are not physically able to sustain the rigorous treatments that would be necessary. Without adequate vaccination protection, illness can strike at any time. Since many of these diseases do not cause visible symptoms until several days after infection, your pet could visit a dog park, grooming salon, or kennel and contract this illness by interacting with a seemingly “healthy” dog or cat. This is why it is so important for pet owners to keep their pets up-to-date on core vaccinations. Vaccinations are a far more affordable alternative to expensive emergency vet care!

Whether your pet needs a vaccination booster or a complete puppy/kitten shot series, the South Valley Animal Clinic Care team is committed to doing everything possible to keeping our vaccinations affordable and accessible. We know that pet owners want the very best for the special pets in their lives, but that regular pet care can be expensive. Spay and Neuter Albuquerque, NM

Spay and Neuter

Spaying or neutering, another dog and cat veterinary service provided at our clinic, also makes a big difference in your pet’s health. In addition to the obvious benefit of preventing litters of unanticipated additions to the already overburdened cat and dog population, surgical sterilization can prevent reproductive or urological infections and cancers. It also controls the spraying, aggression and other antisocial behaviors associated with sexual cycles.
